TechHive reported that Ted Malone, TiVo’s vice president of consumer products and services, commented that the Roku and Apple TV apps are “in limbo.” The apps were first discussed at last year’s CES, showing how TiVo users could use the apps to access their TiVo recordings on other devices for other TVs, rather than requiring the purchase of additional TiVo devices.
While this doesn’t mean that plans to launch the apps have been cancelled altogether, Malone did choose to focus on Android and Fire TV instead. He said that Android TV support would be the logical next step to go along with the TiVo Stream 4K, followed by Amazon Fire, both of which run Android TV.
This is the official statement TiVo gave after Malone’s comments about the additional apps being in limbo.
“During the second half of this year, we re-prioritized several projects in order to focus on the launch of TiVo Stream 4K. Because of this, the streamer clients were put on hold. We are looking at moving forward with the Android streamer client in order to provide compatibility between Stream and Linux based DVR’s. Apple TV and Roku clients are currently on hold.”
