TiVo Kills Its Mavrik Project & the Future of TiVO DVR Is in Doubt

It looks like one of the more innovative products that TiVo had ever worked on is now dead.

The TiVo Mavrik is a Tablo-like DVR that would have offered cloud DVR storage, a dual-tuner, and the ability to stream your antenna to multiple sources such as a Roku or Fire TV.

The Mavrik was meant to be the next generation of TiVo DVRs—one that would take on the growing success of the Tablo DVR along with new wireless antennas such as the WatchAir and Mohu AirWave. 2017 has been full of devices that let you take your antenna and stream it online—something TiVo was not the best at.

Now we have a reliable report from ZatzNotFunny.com that TiVo has killed its Mavrik Project and rolled what tech it wanted into the TiVo Bolt. Even more concerning is a report that the TiVo Vox, a traditional DVR with a voice remote, is on the chopping block.

This all seems to be a part of TiVo’s move away from consumer products after its merger with Rovi. It seems TiVo is focusing on being the backend that powers other devices. Recently Roku paid a lot of money to get access to TiVo’s content discovery system to use in Roku players.

The question now is what is the future of the TiVo DVR with the death of the Mavrik and a delay for the Vox or possible cancellation of the device. For now only time will tell…
