TiVo Is Looking at Splitting into Two Companies

For some time now, TiVo has had two main focuses. First, the hardware side that most consumers see. This is what TiVo has been known for; however, that has been increasingly playing second fiddle to their licensing business for their patients.

It is now being reported that TiVo is looking into splitting the hardware and licensing businesses into two separate companies. This came from TiVo’s interim CEO Raghu Rau during TiVo’s 4th quarter earnings call this week.

Rau was clear that no formal steps have been taken but that TiVo is looking into what a split of the company would mean. With that said, TiVo may be waiting until their current legal battles with Comcast are over before any potential split may happen.

Right now, TiVo and Comcast are fighting over patents. TiVo says Comcast is using their technology and needs to pay TiVo for the rights. This has turned into a long battle since Tivo/Rovi’s license deal with Comcast lapsed in early 2016.

Other companies have split like this recently. TCL may be the most noticeable one for cord cutters. TCL split into a consumer company that focuses on devices like phones and TVs and a business company focusing on business products.
