There is a Move to Ban Sports Betting Ads on TV, Internet, & Radio

Fans cheering

If you have watched TV at all in the last few years, you have likely seen ads for sports betting in most parts of the United States. Now there is a push to ban these ads in the same way we ban smoking ads.

Recently Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY) introduced the Betting on our Future Act. This bill would direct the FCC to ban sports betting ads on TV, the internet, and radio. This bill was first spotted on LegalSportsReport.com.

Re. Paul Tonko takes issue with what he calls a “variety of predatory tactics” that sports betting groups use to attract customers. Specifically the use of “risk-free” type advertising to attract new customers.

This wouldn’t eliminate ads for sports betting or sports betting sponsorships. It would put substantial limitations on where they can advertise.

This comes as the NBA announced that its partners would be banned from using the term “risk-free” on anything the NBA controls.

Ohio has also banned some language in sports betting ads and has recently gone after BetMGM, Ceasars, and Draftkings.

For now, the bill is still in the early stages, but a growing number of groups are pushing for at least more regulation of sports betting ads.
