‘The Wonder Years’ Reboot Underway with Fred Savage Directing Potential Pilot

Hulu The Wonder Years

A new version of the ’80s/’90s hit The Wonder Years could hit airwaves soon, with original series star Fred Savage directing the potential pilot episode and serving as executive producer. ABC, which aired the show from 1988 to 1993, has reportedly issued a pilot production commitment and if the pilot script is approved, production for the initial episode could begin.

Alongside Savage, industry veterans Saladin K. Patterson (The Big Bang Theory, Psych, Dave, The Bernie Mac Show) and Lee Daniels (Empire, Star) are also reportedly involved. The script, penned by Patterson, is said to focus on a middle-class Black family growing up in Montgomery, Alabama, in the late ’60s, which would be around the same time frame as the original show’s setting.

In addition to directing the possible pilot, Savage would also serve as executive producer, alongside Patterson. As Deadline points out, ABC’s been looking at reviving prior hits in recent years, including Roseanne spinoff The Connors, and a thirtysomething sequel it eventually passed on earlier this year.
