‘The Witches’ Will Skip Theaters, Go Straight to Streaming on HBO Max

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that its remake of Roald Dahl’s The Witches, originally set to launch in movie theaters on October 9, will instead go straight to streaming on HBO Max on October 22.

The remake of The Witches is based on the 1983 novel by Roald Dahl. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Kristin Chenoweth and Chris Rock, along with newcomer Jahzir Kadeen Bruno.

The Witches is a wonderful reimagining of Roald Dahl’s timeless tale that combines world-class filmmaking with fantastic performances. It’s fun for the whole family and ideal for this time of year,” Toby Emmerich, chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said in a statement.

Here’s the official synopsis for those who aren’t familiar with this creepy children’s classic:

Reimagining Dahl’s beloved story for a modern audience, Zemeckis’s visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.
