“The way that people watch TV is constantly changing and evolving – watching TV on your own device on your own schedule has become more prevalent than watching traditional TV at a set time in a fixed location. In line with this shift in viewing and in an effort to provide the type of access programming our community is asking for beginning this Fall, Philo.Edu will become the exclusive way for on-campus residents to watch TV,” New York University said in a statement sent to their students.
Philo’s partnership with universities is nothing new. Philo started as a service for colleges around the United States. Now more and more are dumping cable as they move to streaming services like Philo. Many cable companies have in the past almost given away their services to universities with the hopes that when students graduate they will keep paying for cable TV because they are used to it. The loss of colleges could have a long-term impact on cable.
