This all comes as the NFL is getting ready for its big contract renewals in 2022. At that time, the NFL will have the ability to resell some of its TV rights including the very popular NFL Sunday Ticket. Currently, the NFL gets about $1.5 billion years from AT&T for its DIRECTV Sunday Ticket package. The NFL has reportedly been pushing to make the NFL Sunday Ticket service more widely available to customers who don’t pay for AT&T’s DIRECTV service.
If everything plays out the way some expect it to, the NFL could be making as much as $10 billion a year from its next round of media deals after the 2022 season.
Amazon’s deal to stream NFL’s Thursday Night Football comes to an end after this season. This means a new round of bidding will happen for the rights to stream these games. Amazon is expected to once again bid for the rights but word is that others including DAZN and YouTube may be interested in the rights to stream Thursday Night NFL games.
Super Bowl rights are also coming up for renewal and according to reports, ABC is also interested in once again airing the Super Bowl.
The bad news is these kinds of price hikes are what drives TV fees up. As networks have to pay more for the rights to air sporting events they charge cable TV and streaming services more. This, in the end, gets passed along to the end consumer who has to pay more for TV even if they don’t watch NFL football.
