Multichannel reports that the new agreement has been set and will allow the league to increase the number of regular season games to 17, along with potentially including an extra playoff game.
Along with the length of the season and player salaries, the agreement also opened the door for negotiations on TV rights after the NFL’s current TV rights deals expire in two years. This has led to media companies including Disney, ViacomCBS, and Amazon to begin the fight over rights that will increase revenue and draw in more viewers during the NFL season.
In a statement made yesterday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “We are pleased that the players have voted to ratify the proposed new CBA, which will provide substantial benefits to all current and retired players, increase jobs, ensure continued progress on player safety, and give our fans more and better football. We appreciate the tireless efforts of the members of the Management Council Executive Committee and the NFLPA leadership, both of whom devoted nearly a year to detailed, good faith negotiations to reach this comprehensive, transformative agreement.”
The agreement, which will go into effect in 2020 and run through 2030, was ratified by the NFL Players Association in a vote of 1,019 to 959.
