The New SpongeBob Movie is Heading Straight to Streaming

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea and is skipping theaters to go right to streaming? SpongeBob Squarepants! ViacomCBS’ new animated film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is taking a play out of NBCUniversal and WarnerBros’ books by foregoing the theatrical window to head directly to the video-on-demand marketplaces. The film will then be available for streaming on CBS All Access.

The Spongebob movie was originally set to hit theaters August 7th, but has been pushed back to 2021.

After Universal touted its successful VOD debut with Trolls World Tour and WarnerBros Scoob! passed up theaters in favor of a home-streaming launch, ViacomCBS is following suit by skipping theaters altogether for its upcoming animated SpongeBob movie.

“We’re happy to give kids and families a much-deserved lift in any way we can, and the PVOD release of the new SpongeBob theatrical and putting all seasons of the TV series on CBS All Access are two of the best ways I can think of to get immersed in the optimism and joy that this terrific character represents,” said Ramsey Naito, executive vice president of Nickelodeon’s animation production and development division.

Ahead of the Sponge on the Run movie, CBS All Access confirmed it will be getting all prior seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants, so you can catch up on all your favorite episodes while you wait for the SpongeBob movie to debut.
