The Most Popular Cord Cutting OTA DVRs of 2018 Are…

We often get asked what the best DVR is for cord cutting. Your antenna is a great way to watch a ton of content. Now with an over-the-air TV DVR, you can record your programs and watch them when you want to. So, what is the best OTA DVR for cord cutting?

Instead of telling you what we thought, for the second quarter in a row we asked over 2,000 of our readers what they thought. From that survey, we came up with this list.

The #1 DVR For Cord Cutting Is the Tablo DVR

The Tablo DVR allows you to stream your antenna to multiple devices and with 10.7% of the vote, it was the most popular DVR among our readers. (Up 3% from the summer of 2018.) Unlike many DVRs that connect to a single TV, the Tablo streams your antenna to a long list of devices including Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, iOS, and Android.

The #2 DVR For Cord Cutting Is the TiVo DVR

TiVo has long been known as one of the best DVRs on the market. Now they have TiVo DVRs for OTA TV. According to our readers, they are the second most popular DVR with 7.4% of our readers using it. (Flat from the summer 2018 survey.)

The #3 DVR For Cord Cutting Is the Plex DVR

If you have a home media server, you likely know of Plex. It’s a great way to manage your media and a great DVR program. Plex is more like software, so you will still need a USB or network tuner and a device to run it on. Plex DVR is a powerful DVR that many cord cutters love with 6.5% of our readers using Plex as their DVR.

The #4 DVR For Cord Cutting Is the HDHomeRun

The HDHomeRun is a powerful network tuner that lets you stream your antenna to multiple devices. If you have a media server, you can use the HDHomeRun DVR software to record shows and movies. About 6% of our readers say they use HDHomeRun as their DVR.

One Important Note

Whereas 65.5% of cord cutters use an antenna, only 32% of cord cutters own an OTA DVR. (Up from 28.8% in the summer of 2018.) Although an antenna is a great way to get access to a ton of free content, if you don’t have a DVR you are not taking full advantage of all the free content available with an antenna.
