‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 Almost Did as Well as Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ 3 on Opening Weekend

Season 2 of Disney’s The Mandalorian dropped last Friday October 30, and its opening weekend numbers show it did even better than the first season’s release. The anticipation of a second season after viewers had time to discover the first plays a role in the success of season 2, along with Disney+’s growing subscriber base.

Data from the extensive movie and TV streaming search engine Reelgood shows The Mandalorian‘s series premiere in 2019 held 4.4% streaming share over it’s opening weekend, compared to Season 2’s 5.7%. The latter is just barely below Netflix’s numbers for Stranger Things season 3 which was released July 5, 2019. The sci-fi original pulled in 5.8% over its opening weekend last summer.

Somewhat suprisingly, season 2 of Amazon Prime’s original The Boys is the force to be reckoned with in this regard. The second season to the irreverent superhero series cornered 7.2% of streaming share on its opening weekend Sept. 4-6, 2020. Netflix’s new release The Queen’s Gambit has everyone talking and sits in the No. 5 spot on this chart, with 4.3%.
