The FCC is Investigating Amazon & Others Over Alleged Sale Of Outlawed Products

Yesterday, the Federal Communications Commission said that it was investigating Amazon and others for selling unlawful electronic devices, including radio farmers.

At issue here are devices used to block WiFi and cell phone signals. These devices have recently become popular with thieves, who use them to jam security cameras and alarm systems ability to report break-ins. These jammers can even block drones from communicating with their ground system.

The law at issue here is Communication Act of 1934, which makes devices like this illegal to the point that even police are prevented from using them.

Amazon itself is not selling these products, but third-party companies selling in stores like Amazon are the issue. While companies like Amazon routinely remove illegal products, the FCC is investigating whether Amazon and others are doing enough to prevent these products from being sold.

The FCC is likely hoping to have retailers like Amazon put stricter measures in place to prevent devices like these from being sold. This could force Amazon and other retailers to put longer review processes in place for new listings on their sites.

Issues like this are not new. For years, Amazon has been flooded with illegal streaming devices preloaded with piracy. Over the last five-plus years, though, Amazon has tried to crack down on these devices, making them harder to find. Now, it seems a new sector is trying to sell illegal products through Amazon.

Amazon’s open marketplace, which allows other companies to sell through its store, has helped create thousands of legitimate businesses. Sadly, though, some have taken advantage of the system to market illegal products.
