The FCC is Cracking Down on Robo Callers Blocking 1,200 Phone Providers Over Spam Calls

In a significant crackdown on illegal robocalls, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has escalated its efforts to protect American consumers by removing over 1,200 non-compliant voice service providers from its Robocall Mitigation Database. This action, executed by the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau, effectively disconnects these providers from the U.S. phone network, targeting those who failed to maintain accurate certifications or implement required robocall mitigation measures. The move follows an earlier removal of 185 providers on August 6, 2025, signaling the FCC’s intensified commitment to curbing the pervasive issue of robocalls.

The FCC’s latest action comes amid a troubling trend where robocallers have increasingly targeted cord cutters—individuals who have abandoned traditional cable services in favor of streaming platforms and internet-based communication. These scammers have been impersonating popular streaming services and internet providers, using sophisticated tactics to deceive consumers. The fake calls often claim issues with subscriptions, offer fraudulent discounts, or request personal information under the guise of account verification. This surge in targeted robocalls has heightened concerns, as cord cutters, reliant on internet-based services, are particularly vulnerable to such scams.

The FCC’s Robocall Mitigation Database plays a pivotal role in ensuring that voice service providers adhere to strict regulations, including the implementation of STIR/SHAKEN caller ID authentication on IP-based networks. Providers must also submit detailed robocall mitigation plans to demonstrate their commitment to combating illegal calls. Failure to comply results in severe consequences, such as removal from the database and the blocking of their network traffic. The 1,200 providers removed in this latest action were among 2,411 ordered in December 2024 to address deficient filings or face expulsion. Those removed will need express approval from the FCC’s Enforcement and Wireline Competition Bureaus to rejoin the database.

This enforcement effort builds on earlier actions, including the removal of 185 providers earlier in August 2025, many of which were linked to robocall tracebacks as originating or gateway providers. Complementing the FCC’s actions, a bipartisan coalition of 51 state attorneys general launched Operation Robocall Roundup, targeting 37 voice providers with warning letters. These providers, including seven previously removed by the FCC, were flagged for failing to support traceback efforts or comply with robocall mitigation requirements.

The rise in robocalls targeting cord cutters underscores the urgency of these measures. Scammers exploit the growing reliance on streaming services and internet providers, using spoofed numbers to create convincing ploys. The FCC’s aggressive stance aims to restore consumer confidence and disrupt the operations of bad actors. As robocallers adapt their tactics, the agency’s ongoing efforts signal a robust commitment to safeguarding Americans from this persistent threat.
