The FCC has Updated Its Broadband Speed Test App for More Accuracy

The FCC has an app that lets users test the speed of their mobile broadband connections, and now it’s been updated for the latest iOS and Android operating systems to provide an even more accurate look at the service you’re receiving.

“This new and improved app is an important tool that will empower consumers to collect information about the services they are receiving,” said Dr. Monisha Ghosh, FCC Chief Technology Officer. “These improvements will build on the success of this effort over the years and help the FCC bridge the digital divide. The app has also been updated to collect information about 5G networks to help inform the agency in its work on next-generation wireless services.”

With the updated app available from the Apple Store and Google Play, users can test their cellular and Wi-Fi network performance for download and upload speed, latency, jitter, and packet loss. Plus, the app doesn’t require or retain any personal information or data.

The FCC Speed Test mobile application is part of a campaign to provide consumers with free, open and transparent information on the status of mobile broadband performance across the United States. The app plays a big role in supporting the Measuring Broadband America program which holds the Commission accountable for meeting requirements to conduct accurate public surveys to determine the quality of broadband performance and capabilities in residential markets. It also helps the Commission make informed decisions on broadband policies

All this collected information is free to the public on the FCC’s website. Now included is the latest data for mobile measurements conducted by the FCC Speed Test App through the second quarter of 2020
