To help measure and get a better understanding of internet speeds from across the country, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is encouraging the public to use their newly released speed test app.
Similar to existing speed tests like Oookla and Project Stream, the FCC Speed Test App will give users insights into their download and upload speed, latency, and more. However, the data the FCC obtains will be used as part of the FCC’s Measuring Broadband America program. As part of the program, the FCC will be able to figure out which areas of the country will need improvements with their broadband while allowing users to know how fast their speed is in real-time.
To find out your speed, you can volunteer by downloading the FCC Speed Test App on your Android or Apple device. The FCC has made improvements with the app including an enhanced user interface to make the data easier for users to analyze and understand. Plus, the FCC is committed to protecting the privacy of their volunteers as no personally identifiable information will be collected.
“To close the gap between digital haves and have nots, we are working to build a comprehensive, user-friendly dataset on broadband availability. Expanding the base of consumers who use the FCC Speed Test app will enable us to provide improved coverage information to the public and add to the measurement tools we’re developing to show where broadband is truly available throughout the United States,” said Acting Chairwoman Rosenworcel in a press release from the FCC.
