The Death of Cable TV: TNT No Longer Airs New Original Scripted Programs

Last week TNT announced that it would not air the final season of ‘Snowpiercer’ even though the show had completed productions on its fourth and final season, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter

“TNT will not air season four of Snowpiercer,” a TNT spokesperson said in a statement. “This was a difficult decision, but our admiration for the talented writers, actors and crew who brought Snowpiercer’s extraordinary post-apocalyptic world to life remains strong. We have been working collaboratively with the producers since last year to help the series find a new home where fans can continue to enjoy the compelling story and exceptional visual experience. We look forward to working with them on future projects.”

With this move, it means that TNT will have no new original scripted programming airing on the network. Instead, you will find reruns and a collection of sporting events like the NBA. This is the first time since 1996 that TNT won’t be offering original programming.

This has become a growing trend as increasingly Americans no longer watch programming on networks like TNT; instead, they are turning to streaming services like Hulu, Paramount+, and HBO Max, to name a few.

Increasingly to attract viewers, networks like TNT are turning to live events like sports. To fill the time, they are not airing live events on TNT, and others are looking at cheaper reruns. Like classic movies plus shows like NCIS: New Orleans, Charmed, and Supernatural, to name a few.
