The CW Picks Up Cancelled Hallmark Series, Ride

Hallmark Channel western series Ride, a family drama focusing on rodeo life, was canceled after only one season. The CW said on Wednesday the network will pick up the first season in 2024.

The CW will start airing repeats of the show next year on January 22 at 8:00 p.m. ET followed by a new original scripted series Wild Cards at 9:00 p.m. The network doesn’t plan to order a second season of Ride, according to Deadline.

The series was short-lived, debuting on Hallmark in March and the finale aired on May 28. Hallmark canceled the show in November. While many networks are noticing smaller viewership as more people flock to streaming services like Prime Video or Max, Hallmark hasn’t lost numbers as significantly as other cable TV networks, partly due to its popular Countdown to Christmas original festive films during the holiday season.

Cast and crew were disappointed to hear Rides wouldn’t see another season, saying the show wasn’t given enough time to establish itself.

“Fans seem to live it, the ratings are pretty good,” actor Beau Mirchoff said to TVline. “More people are discovering it, that’s really cool. Sometimes, shows need a little time. It’s a really great show. I think they’d be silly not to give it a second season.”

The series follows the McMurrays, members of a multigenerational rodeo dynasty, as they struggle to keep their Colorado ranch while tragedy and long-buried secrets threaten to tear the family apart. Ride stars Nancy Travis (Last Man Standing), Tiera Skovbye (Riverdale), Beau Mirchoff (Good Trouble), Sara Garcia (The Flash), Jake Foy (Designated Survivor), and Tyler Jacob Moore (Shameless).

The series was produced by Blink49 Studios and Seven24 Film. It was written by Rebecca Boss and Chris Masi and directed by Paolo Barzman.
