‘The Crown’ is Returning to Netflix for an Unexpected Sixth and Final Season

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that its original series The Crown would be ending after 5 seasons. But in a twist of events, the historical British drama is returning for a sixth – and this time final – season. Season six will continue the storyline into the 21st century with Imelda Staunton cast as her royal highness.

Season 4 wrapped up shooting just before the coronavirus lockdown and is expected to premiere December 2020. Netflix confirmed the series would culminate with season 5, but it sounds like there are too many loose ends to tie up.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” said writer/creator Peter Morgan. “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

For the upcoming new season, Netflix has confirmed Lesley Manville will play Princess Margaret, with Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles and Princess Diana played by Emma Corrin.

“‘The Crown’ keeps raising the bar with each new season,” said Cindy Holland, VP of original content at Netflix. “We can’t wait for audiences to see the upcoming fourth season, and we’re proud to support Peter’s vision and the phenomenal cast and crew for a sixth and final season.”
