The Cost of ESPN for Cable TV Subscribers Has More Than Doubled Since 2010

Have you wondered why cable TV and even streaming services have seen their prices jump so much since 2010? The high cost of content is one of the main reasons.

In 2010, ESPN was just $4.39 a month. Now that has jumped to $9.42 a month, according to a Wall Street Journal report from  last year that was also used in the Fubo lawsuit to stop Venu Sports from launching.

This lines up with the jump we have seen since 2010. Cable TV executives have continued to point to the cost of content as the number one reason the price of cable TV has gone up.

Sports channels are by far the highest priced channels on any TV service. That is why services like Frndly TV and Philo have seen their prices stay low because they don’t have sports channels. Though even those services have been forced to raise their price as cable networks keep demanding more and more money to help offset the dropping number of subscribers paying for their channels.

This fight between networks wanting more money and cable networks worried about losing subscribers has resulted in blackouts becoming common on many cable TV and streaming services over the last few years. This fight is likely far from over as cord cutting continues to impact the cable TV industry.
