The BBC is Joining Discovery’s New Streaming Service

For some time now we have heard that Disvoery was working on a new streaming service. Discovery CEO has even repeatedly talked about a ~$5 a month type streaming services that would give you access to Discovery and Scripps content. Now the New York Post is reporting that the BBC will be joining this effort and the new service will cost less than $5 a month.

According to the NY Post, BBC Studio’s natural history programs will be joining the new services in areas outside the UK, Ireland, and China. This will lineup very well with Discovery’s content from the History Channel, HGTV, Science, and other networks.

Discovery and BBC Studios also announced plans to end their joint TV deal in the UK. BBC Studios is paying Disvoery $225 million and Discovery is taking full control of the UK channels Good Food, Home and Really.

Last year Discovery’s CEO opened up about their new streaming plans saying: “We will be looking hard at that both domestically and internationally,” said Zaslav. “We could create a pretty compelling offering for $6, $7 or $8 that would look a lot different than Amazon Prime and Netflix, and it could be very attractive in every language globally. So we’ll keep our eye on that.”

According to the NY Post, this new services won’t launch until sometime in 2020.
