The Average Viewers’ Streaming Time has Increased by 4 Hours During COVID-19

New research released by free streaming service Tubi and OnePoll shows that viewers are getting a lot more screen time in since the start of coronavirus. In fact, the average viewer is spending an additional 4 hours on top of what they were watching before the start of the pandemic early this spring.

During just the past two months, the average streamer has binged four shows and watched 20 movies. More than half of the survey respondents say that’s more than they would be watching during a normal summer. With people relying more heavily on streaming for entertainment this year, some people are finding it hard to discover new content to watch. Thirty-five percent of respondents say they’ve signed up for new streaming services in search of new shows and movies to watch.

But subscribing to multiple streaming services can get pricey. With Netflix plans reaching $15.99, Hulu ranging from $6 to $12, and HBO Max coming in at $15, just to name a few, 38% of respondents ages 18-24 and 31% of 25-34-year-olds have admitted to password sharing.

Meanwhile, 1 in 4 people has taken advantage of a free trial offer and canceled before having to pay the subscription fee, usually doing this three times with different streamers. People are also turning to more free, ad-supported streaming services like Tubi and Pluto TV to ease the strain on the wallet during these times when spending hours in front of the TV each day has become the new normal.
