There are now hundreds of streaming services and apps, but most Americans are only using a handful of these. According to Inscape’s TV Market Trends Report from Q4 2023, Americans use just 5.5 apps on their smart TV on average.

“Smart TVs and their myriad available apps have become a personalized gateway for consumers to engage with content they care about. But while the average number of apps used per TV nearly doubled from 2021 to 2023, usage has stabilized over the last 9 months, at around 5.5 native apps used per smart TV—perhaps a sign to the market that consumers have had their fill and are simply fatigued by an endless array of subscriptions and authentications to navigate,” according to the Q4 2023 TV Market Trends report.

While there are more options than ever, most Americans are happy to have a handful of services to watch everything they enjoy.

This report is not only about paid services but also free ad-supported services. With hundreds of streaming services competing to be one of the 5.5 services on your TV, you can see why most of them are not making money in 2024.
