Last year Tablo DVRs announced it was putting its ATSC 3.0 version on hold. This new DVR would let you watch the new over-the-air TV standard (OTA TV) called ATSC 3.0, making your antenna a great way to record a growing list of channels.
Now, the president of Scripps which owns Tablo, has announced they are still working on that DVR and plan to release it soon.
In an interview with Cord Cutters News, when asked about Tablo DVRs and ATSC 3.0, Scripps CEO Adam Symon said: “The fourth-generation version today is a 1.0 receiver. It’s a decision of ours as to when we want to transition to 3.0 receivers, and I don’t think it’s going to be too long.”
There are many issues to work through with the new ATSC 3.0 standard including DRM. It has been reported that the current DRM standard doesn’t support network tuners. That’s why no DVR for ATSC 3.0 currently supports streaming of content that is encrypted with DRM to other devices. Exactly how Tablo plans to get around these issues, including changing the DRM rules, remains to be seen.
For now, we will have to wait and see how Tablo DVRs for your antenna will work with the new ATSC 3.0 Nextgen TV standard. What we do know is they are still working on ways to get ATSC 3.0 to work with the Tablo DVRs.
