T-Mobile is pushing the boundaries of home internet with a new pilot program in Phoenix, Arizona, offering customers the chance to experience blazing-fast speeds with mmWave 5G technology. This invite-only trial, which began on October 21st, provides a glimpse into the future of home internet, with speeds potentially surpassing those of traditional wired connections, according to a report from The Mobile Report.
While T-Mobile has offered 5G Home Internet since 2021, it has relied solely on Sub-6 5G signals, which offer wider coverage but lower speeds compared to mmWave. mmWave 5G utilizes higher frequencies, delivering significantly faster speeds but with a more limited range and susceptibility to obstructions.
Free Service, Free Cash, and Expert Installation
To entice customers to participate in the trial, T-Mobile is offering a compelling incentive package:
- Free mmWave Internet: Participants will receive the mmWave 5G Home Internet service at no cost for the duration of the trial.
- Free Existing Lines: T-Mobile will cover the cost of existing voice lines (up to 12) and standard 5G Home Internet lines (up to 2) for trial participants.
- $500 Gift Card: Upon completion of the trial, participants will receive a $500 prepaid gift card.
Nokia-Powered Technology
The trial utilizes Nokia-manufactured equipment, including an indoor router and an outdoor mmWave antenna. The antenna requires professional installation by Asurion to ensure optimal signal reception. Interestingly, the devices appear to be standard Nokia models, not specifically branded for T-Mobile, suggesting that this is an early-stage pilot program.
WiFi 7 and Unlimited Data
The mmWave gateway is rumored to support the latest WiFi 7 standard, promising even faster wireless speeds within the home. The service itself boasts unlimited data and no speed caps, although internal documents suggest that it may be prioritized lower on the network to avoid impacting other T-Mobile customers.
Trial Details and Availability
The trial is scheduled to run until May 2025, giving participants approximately six months of free service. After the trial concludes, participants will need to schedule de-installation of the equipment. It remains unclear whether customers will have the option to continue the service for a fee after the trial period.
This mmWave 5G Home Internet trial is strictly by invitation only, and T-Mobile is currently not accepting requests for participation. However, the pilot program provides valuable insights into the potential of mmWave technology to deliver ultra-fast home internet speeds, potentially revolutionizing the way we connect to the internet in the future.
