T-Mobile is planning to launch several initiatives to crack down on cybercriminals, according to a screenshot of an internal communication shared on T-Mobile’s subreddit.
The initiatives come after a tough year for T-Mobile on the cybersecurity front. By May, the mobile carrier had already experienced two data breaches. In September, the company fixed a glitch in its app that that allowed customers to see other users’ account data. That same month, one of the carrier’s experienced a breach that leaked 90GB of data. These incidents follow years of breaches from the carrier.
T-Mobile declined to comment on the document but said it was working to shore up its defenses.
“We continue to take measures that ensure we’re in the best possible position to ensure our systems and processes continue to protect customer information.
The financial impact of cybercrime is forecasted to reach $8 trillion this year, according to the post. The message, which seems to be addressing T-Mobile employees, details the carrier’s plans for Cyberfest 2023, which recognizes October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month:
“Throughout Cyberfest, you will have the opportunity to learn about cyberthreats from industry experts, test your cyber knowledge, win awesome prizes, and take a sneak peek at some advanced cyber initiatives we are launching as a company to keep cyber criminals away.
During Cyberfest, you will learn about several important security initiatives that are scheduled to launch over the next few weeks. These programs are designed to immediately fortify T-Mobile’s “CyberShield” while simultaneously making it easier and faster to authenticate employees and customers.”
The message also mentions Zscaler, which reportedly enhances T-Mobile’s cyber filter to protect against suspicious websites. The carrier is also planning to enhance name match verification. The tool will reportedly tap artificial intelligence to ensure accurate verification. Lastly, ResetMe will make it easier for self-service password resets.
