T-Mobile Has a New President

Mid age woman sitting at tableYesterday T-Mobile announced that they have promoted Mike Sievert to the role of president. John Leger, who in the past was both president and CEO, will remain T-Mobile’s CEO.

Sievert has been T-Mobile’s COO since 2015 and will remain so now that he is also president. Before joining T-Mobile, Sievert was CMO at AT&T Wireless from 2002 to 2005. After that he moved to Microsoft’s Global Windows Group as vice president.

Sievert was an advocate for T-Mobile’s purchase of Layer3 TV to launch T-Mobile’s own TV service.

With the upcoming Sprint merger and launch of T-Mobile TV, it is likely that T-Mobile is trying to free up CEO Leger to focus on other areas. This will let Sievert take on many of the tasks Leger no longer has time for.

Sievert is expected to be COO if the Sprint/T-Mobile merger goes through. This could hint at T-Mobile working to rearrange leadership to get ready to bring in some of Sprint’s current management.

The world of wireless providers is extremely competitive. T-Mobile has been working hard to diversify into TV and expand by merging with Sprint.
