T-Mobile Expects Nationwide 5G Coverage in 2020

Girl on PhoneThis week, T-Mobile announced that they will launch their 5G network in 2019. The best news is T-Mobile expects to offer nationwide 5G coverage in 2020.

“We’re squarely focused on creating a great customer experience – not for a chosen few, but for everyone. To do that, a combination of low, mid and high band spectrum is required. This is new T-Mobile’s multi-band 5G spectrum strategy (a key part of our proposed merger with Sprint), and it’s key to America’s global competitiveness in 5G,” T-Mobile said in a press statement sent to Cord Cutters News.

T-Mobile plans to launch their 5G network when they have a phone ready. The big question now is how widespread their home Internet will be versus their mobile 5G service. For now we will have to wait and see what T-Mobile does next.

Verizon has already launched a home Internet 5G service in several markets. This week, AT&T launched their mobile 5G service in a handful of markets. T-Mobile hopes that by quickly rolling out their home Internet they can stand out from a crowded 5G marketplace.

5G brings the promise of a new home Internet competitor to areas that at best had only two. Yet it will likely take a few years before we see the promise of 5G become a reality.

Update: T-Mobile reached out to Cord Cutters News to clarify that they always intended to launch the network in 2019. The 2018 goal was to build the T-Mobile 5G network for a 2019 public launch.
