Survey: 83% of Moviegoers Will See At Least 3 Films in Theaters This Summer

A recent survey of moviegoers shows that movie fans are planning to get back to theaters in a big way this summer. Fandango found that 83% of the 6,000 people surveyed plan to see at least three movies on the big screen in the next few months.

The study was conducted in the first quarter of 2022 and showed that 99% of moviegoers were happy with their recent cinema visits. That number was up from the year prior, when 93% were happy with their recent theater experiences.

When asked what films they’re planning to see this summer, these were the top answers given by those surveyed.

  1. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  2. Thor: Love and Thunder
  3. Jurassic World Dominion
  4. Top Gun: Maverick
  5. Minions: The Rise of Gru
  6. Lightyear
  7. Elvis
  8. Nope
  9. Bullet Train
  10. Downton Abbey: A New Era

“As film fans head back to theaters, we are starting to see growing signs of recovery as we make the turn towards a great summer of movies ahead,” said Fandango VP Domestic Ticketing Melissa Heller. “Our study shows moviegoers are happier than ever to be back at the theater. With more in-theater releases on the horizon, film fans plan to see multiple movies in the cinema, enjoying all their favorite concessions throughout the summer season.”

While many cord cutters took full advantage of films premiering on streaming services during the pandemic, the survey shows that movie lovers are looking forward to getting off the couch and back to the theater. Of those surveyed, 68% said they believe movies released only in theaters are of a higher quality than straight-to-streaming titles. In fact, 89% indicated that moviegoing is their favorite activity outside of the home. And yes, the survey did ask about overpriced theater snacks. 93% of moviegoers said they would buy concessions at the theater, with popcorn and soda unsurprisingly being the most popular items listed.

Fandango’s moviegoer study was conducted during the first quarter of 2022 with 6,000 participants who all had purchased at least one movie ticket over the past 12 months.
