Study: The Future of Cord Cutting Is On TVs Not Mobile Devices

Male hand holding TV remote control. For years you may have heard the argument that the future of TV is on mobile devices. The argument is that a growing number of Americans are skipping their TV to watch content on phones and tablets. Now a new report from Conviva says that connected TV views are growing almost twice as fast as mobile views.

According to the report, year-over-year view growth showed phones and tablets gaining 57% but connected TVs saw a 145% jump in viewership. Currently mobile and connected TVs have about the same market share when looking at streaming with 38% and 39% respectively. In the future, expect to see connected TVs pull away in viewing.

This likely has a lot to do with connected TVs being used to view more long-form content vs short-form content viewed on mobile devices.

There was one area that saw a decline in views. When looking at streams on PCs there was an 18% drop in viewing hours. This likely points to the decline in use of PCs as people move to phones and tablets for many activities they used to do on laptops and desktops.
