Study: Here Are the Top 10 Most Popular Streaming Services

Male hand holding TV remote control. We are often asked what service is more popular than another. Who has the most subscribers? Who gets used the most?

Now we have a new study from TiVo (formally DigitalSmiths) that asked over 3,000 people what services they used during the first quarter of 2017. Likely to no one’s surprise Netflix still dominates with over 54% of the streaming market; however, what is more interesting is what is happening farther down the list.

The following are the top 10 streaming services according TiVo:

  1. Netflix 54.4%
  2. Amazon Prime Video (free movies with Prime) 27.3%
  3. Hulu 11.9%
  4. HBO Now (not counting HBO GO) 5%
  5. Showtime Anytime 5%
  6. YouTube Red 3.6%
  7. CBS All Access 2.8%
  8. DIRECTV NOW 2.2%
  9. Sling TV 1.5%
  10. PlayStation Vue 1.4%

The study also gave us a look into the growth of the big three streaming services. Netflix saw a 2.5% jump year over year and an 11.8% jump from three years ago. Amazon Prime Video saw a 4.2% jump year over year and a 12.8% jump from three years ago. Although Hulu is still in third place, according to the survey, “While Hulu ranks among the top three SVOD services used by respondents, it experienced little to no growth q/q or y/y.”

The other interesting news is DIRECTV NOW jumping up to #8 beating out both Sling TV and PlayStation Vue.

Overall 65.6% of respondents said they use a subscription streaming video service. That is a 4.9% increase year over year and a 16.5% increase from three years ago.
