Streaming Services are Using Dramas, Documentaries, and True Crime to Target Older Viewers

Streaming has become the new normal when it comes to TV providers with nearly 8 in 10 TV consumers now use a streaming service. Younger generations have been using them close to their whole adult life, and now older audiences are adopting the digital age as well.

“The fastest growth in uptake of VOD viewing is now in the 35–44-year-old age bracket,” Minal Modha, consumer research lead at Ampere Analysis, said in a statement. “Nearly twice as many in this age group are now high VOD viewers compared to two years ago.”

A new study by Ampere Analysis shows that streaming services are commissioning TV shows and movies of certain genres in an effort to appeal to consumers who are age 35+. The most popular genres among viewers in that age bracket are drama, Crime & Thriller, SciFI & Fantasy, and Documentary style content.

Consumers who don’t use video on demand options are 55% more likely to be older than 45. Streaming services are working to tap into that demographic with targeted content offerings that will appeal to older generations.
