Streaming providers worldwide are making significant strides in enhancing user experience, as shown by a dramatic reduction in buffer ratios for Video-on-Demand (VOD) services. According to a recent report from NPAW, a leader in streaming video intelligence services, the first half of 2024 witnessed a remarkable 54% decrease in global buffer ratios for VOD content compared to the same period in 2023.
This improvement underscores the ongoing efforts of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, Telcos, and Broadcasters to enhance streaming quality. The reduced buffer ratio is a key performance indicator (KPI) reflecting the success of these efforts, as streaming providers focus on infrastructure buildout to minimize latency and ensure smoother playback for consumers.
Linear TV services also saw notable improvements in buffering, with a global reduction of 34% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same timeframe in 2023. The Asia region, in particular, experienced a significant 35% decrease in buffer ratio, highlighting the region’s rapid advancements in streaming technology.
“Telcos, broadcasters, and OTTs are investing heavily to elevate the overall quality of the streaming video landscape,” said Ferran G. Vilaró, CEO & Co-Founder of NPAW in the report. “With new players continuously entering the market, competition is intensifying, and we’re seeing a global shift away from traditional TV towards streaming providers.”
