Streaming Player Sales Set a New Records in 2015

The growth of cord cutting and of new streaming services drove sales of streaming players to a new record in 2015. Digital media adapters (DMAs), also known as streaming media players, such as Roku, Chromecast, Fire TV, and Apple TV boxes, saw a 15% jump in sales over 2014 to 42 million devices sold in 2015, according to Futuresource Consulting.

“Netflix’s worldwide expansion plans and the increasingly strong foothold of Amazon Prime means that the addressable market (for DMAs) has increased considerably,” said David Tett, market analyst at Futuresource. “The rise in popularity is also due to an attractive interface along with a range of well-maintained range of apps. These ensure that DMAs are a popular option for video streaming, despite the availability of alternative streaming devices such as Smart TVs, IP STBs and game consoles.”

Part of the jump in sales also has to be credited to new devices from Amazon, Google, Roku, and Apple that helped push people to upgrade their services.

Amazon may have seen the largest growth in sales in 2015 over 2014 with a 200% increase in sales of the Fire TV box and Fire TV stick, according to Futuresource.

This jump in sales of cord-cutting related devices is something to keep an eye on. Many people buy all of their cord cutting-needed devices long before they ever call to cancel their pay TV service. This data and others make many think the second half of 2016 will see a flood of new cord cutters.
