Stream Cheers on Paramount+ and See Why It Became a TV Landmark

Some shows are iconic. Others define an entire generation. Cheers somehow managed to be both. From its slow start in the ratings to becoming one of the most acclaimed sitcoms of all time, the Boston bar-based comedy spent 11 seasons showing America that laughter, friendship, and a well-timed beer order could go a long way. And now, all 275 episodes are streaming on Paramount+, giving longtime fans a chance to rewatch and new viewers a chance to see what the hype was all about.

Set almost entirely inside a cozy Boston watering hole, Cheers made the most of its limited space with sharp writing, unforgettable characters, and a perfectly balanced ensemble cast. At the heart of it all was Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former Red Sox pitcher turned bar owner with an ego as big as his dating history. Alongside him were a parade of fan favorites: bookish waitress Diane (Shelley Long), wisecracking Carla (Rhea Perlman), beer-loving Norm (George Wendt), mailman Cliff (John Ratzenberger), and Coach (Nicholas Colasanto), whose warmth grounded the early seasons. As the years went on, the cast expanded to include Woody (Woody Harrelson), Frasier (Kelsey Grammer), Rebecca (Kirstie Alley), and Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth), all of whom left their mark on TV history.

The Show That Almost Didn’t Survive — and Then Took Over TV

It’s hard to believe now, but Cheers premiered in 1982 to dismal ratings. It actually landed at 74th place out of 77 shows. And yet, thanks to critical support and NBC’s patience, the show slowly found its audience. By season three, Cheers had cracked the Top 20. By season five, it was a ratings juggernaut. At its peak in season nine, it was the number one show on television.

More than just a ratings hit, Cheers became a cultural phenomenon. Its theme song, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”, is instantly recognizable. Its series finale in 1993 was the most-watched single episode of the decade. The show won 28 Emmys and was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series every year it was on the air.

But what really made Cheers special was its staying power. The chemistry between Sam and Diane in the early seasons remains one of the most compelling will-they-won’t-they dynamics in TV history. When Diane left, the show didn’t falter Instead, it pivoted, introducing new characters and relationships without losing the charm that made it a hit in the first place. The writing never talked down to the audience. The jokes were smart, the character arcs meaningful, and the emotional moments surprisingly poignant.

Cheers also quietly pushed boundaries. It tackled topics like addiction, feminism, class divides, and even LGBTQ+ issues, all within the context of a sitcom. And it did so with respect and nuance that still resonates today.

Even in reruns, Cheers has endured. Its spinoffs, especially Frasier, carried its legacy into the 2000s and beyond. And now, with the entire series streaming on Paramount+, it’s easier than ever to watch it from the beginning or drop in on your favorite episodes like “Thanksgiving Orphans,” “Simon Says,” or “The Last Call.”

Whether you’re looking for nostalgia, brilliant writing, or just a place where everybody knows your name, Cheers delivers.
