Squid Games is Back as a Reality Show. Here’s the First Trailer

While some prefer to keep the carnage of Korean sensation Squid Game on screen, others want to dive into the action themselves. Today, Netflix launched a teaser for Squid Game: The Challenge, a competition show based on the hit series of the same name.

Netflix’s new show will take 456 people – yes, real people – and put them in the world of Squid Game to compete for $4.56 million, the biggest cash prize in reality show history. Contestants will compete in intense games inspired by the scripted show sans the gruesome elimination process.

Players must form alliances and develop strategies to complete each round while their “character is put to the test.”

“Though the reality version of Squid Game isn’t a matter of life or death, there’s still a lot on the line,” said Netflix. “Through a series of games, each player will be pushed to their limits and forced to ask themselves just how far they’ll go to win, with opportunistic alliances, cutthroat strategies, and timely betrayals to follow.”

The first season of Squid Games quickly became a global hit, shocking audiences with mysterious characters and loads of gruesome deaths. It’s been Netflix’s most-watched show since it launched in 2021, racking up 1.65 billion hours watched in the first 28 days of its release.

Fans have been waiting impatiently for the second season, which was confirmed in June and is expected to debut next year. Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk won an Emmy for the first round of games and is returning to helm the second, saying it will be “even better.”

Until then, fans can check out the reality series. Squid Game: The Challenge debuts on Netflix on November 22. We already know the lengths fictional competitors would go to win, which begs the question: What would 456 real people do for $4.56 million?
