Spotify Gets Even Better With Lossless Audio

Spotify has finally launched its highly anticipated lossless audio feature, a significant upgrade for Premium subscribers in select markets. This rollout, which began in early September 2025, introduces a new level of audio fidelity, allowing listeners to experience music in unprecedented detail. The feature, available at no additional cost to Premium users, is being gradually introduced across more than 50 countries, with markets like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Germany among the first to gain access. The company plans to complete the initial rollout by the end of October, bringing high-quality audio to millions of users worldwide.

The lossless audio feature enables streaming in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, a format that preserves every nuance of a song, from subtle instrumental textures to the warmth of a vocalist’s delivery. This upgrade caters to audiophiles and casual listeners alike, offering a richer experience for new releases and classic tracks. Spotify’s commitment to enhancing its Premium tier is evident in this addition, which complements existing features like AI-driven playlists, collaborative Jam sessions, and expertly curated editorial playlists. The introduction of lossless audio positions Spotify as a stronger competitor in the streaming market, where rivals like Apple Music and Tidal have long offered high-fidelity options.

To provide flexibility, Spotify allows users to customize audio quality settings for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads. Options range from Low to Lossless, with clear indicators of data usage to help users make informed choices. The feature is accessible on mobile, desktop, and tablet devices, as well as through Spotify Connect on compatible hardware from brands like Sony, Bose, and Samsung. Support for additional devices, including Sonos and Amazon products, is slated for release in November 2025. For the best experience, Spotify recommends using wired headphones or speakers via a non-Bluetooth connection, as Bluetooth technology currently lacks the bandwidth to transmit lossless audio without compression.

Enabling lossless audio is straightforward. Users can activate it by navigating to the Media Quality section in the app’s settings and selecting their preferred streaming or download quality. A Lossless indicator appears in the Now Playing view to confirm the feature is active. Due to the larger file sizes of lossless tracks, initial playback may take a moment as the audio caches, but subsequent plays are seamless. This rollout marks a significant step forward for Spotify, reinforcing its position as the world’s leading audio streaming platform while delivering a long-awaited feature to its dedicated user base.
