Sports are Dominating TV as FOX Sports Scores Historic Ratings With World Baseball Classic

The 2026 World Baseball Classic is already delivering huge audiences for FOX Sports. Two USA pool play games on FOX drew massive viewership and set new records for the tournament’s early rounds. The strong numbers show how much interest the global baseball event continues to generate.

According to data from Nielsen Media Research, FOX says Great Britain vs. the USA averaged 2.98 million viewers on Saturday, March 7. The game became the most-watched non-final World Baseball Classic telecast ever on any network. That audience jumped 101% from the USA vs. Great Britain game in 2023, which drew 1.48 million viewers on FOX. The game also peaked at 3.74 million viewers between 10:00 and 10:15 p.m. ET.

Team USA vs. Brazil also delivered strong results for the network, averaging 2.64 million viewers on Friday, March 6. The 15-5 Team USA victory was the most-watched sports event of the day across all networks. During the game, viewership peaked at 3.13 million viewers between 9:45 and 10:00 p.m. ET. Compared to the only USA pool play game on FOX in 2023, the contest had a 78% increase in viewership. The strong numbers highlight the growing popularity of the World Baseball Classic in the United States, as it continues to attract global stars and national pride.

For FOX Sports, the event has become an important part of its spring sports lineup, giving the network high-profile live baseball before the MLB season begins. As part of the larger FOX Sports lineup, the network plans to air 85 MLB games during the 2026 season across FOX, FS1, and the FOX One app. Those broadcasts will feature marquee matchups throughout the summer.

FOX Covers Sports on the Global Stage

The success of the WBC is another example of why sports remain one of the most valuable assets for television networks. Analysts recently warned that major leagues are critical to the economics of traditional television bundles.

Research cited by Bank of America says the NFL acts as the “glue” holding the cable bundle together because of its massive ratings and advertising power. The analysis also notes that rising sports rights costs could put pressure on broadcasters such as FOX, Disney, and Comcast if leagues demand even larger deals in the future. The BofA research found that FOX is unusually reliant on NFL games to support its business, downgrading its rating from “buy” to “underperform.”

FOX’s strategy spreads its portfolio across football, baseball, soccer, motorsports, and college sports, and events like the World Baseball Classic help diversify its schedule, bringing in viewers outside of the NFL season.

Later this summer, FOX will be the main broadcaster of one of the biggest events in sports, the FIFA World Cup 2026. The global soccer tournament will air across FOX platforms, including FOX, FS1, and FOX One. Tubi will also play a role in the overall coverage strategy.

The strong ratings of the WBC have validated FOX’s broader live-sports strategy of using international events to boost linear ratings and drive streaming adoption. Investing in global sports events that deliver massive audiences is setting the tone for the rest of the year, with the MLB season on the horizon and the World Cup approaching.
