Recently Viacom, the parent company behind Spike TV, announced that the network will be renamed The Paramount Network on January 18, 2018.
The network is said to be making a slight shift to more original scripted content with “Waco” premiering in January 2018. The six-part event will focus on the 1993 FBI siege of the Branch Davidians in the greater Waco, Texas area.
That will be followed later by a new original scripted show called “Yellowstone” based on the 1988 cult classic film.
This is all part of the “new strategic vision and framework” that was announced by Viacom CEO Bob Bakish back in February 2017.
Spike first launched as the Nashville Network and later became TNN. In 2003 it was renamed Spike TV with male-oriented programming. Now Viacom wants to make the network “a premium entertainment destination for a gender-balanced audience.”
Sling TV, Philo, and DIRECTV NOW are the only live TV streaming services at this time to offer Spike TV. Subscribers to these services should see The Paramount Network replace Spike TV on January 18, 2018.
