Spectrum is Forcing You to Pay for TV if You Want Internet at Some Apartments

TV RemoteDo you live in an apartment complex that has a contract with Spectrum? You may soon be forced to pay for TV if you want Spectrum Internet.

This week Spectrum started to reach out to customers who live in specific apartment complexes to notify them that they have reached a new bulk-rate deal with the landlord. The only package that would be available to the apartment dweller is a single package with both Internet and 150+ TV channels.

The good news is you get a good rate of $75 a month billed through your rent. (Note that price does not include the cost of a DVR if you want a DVR.) The bad news is you can’t opt-out of TV, and if the rate goes up in the future you are stuck with this package or you need to move if you want just internet.

Cord Cutters News reached out to the apartment complex and confirmed that if you live in their apartments you must pay for Spectrum Internet and TV. The apartment complex said residents living there now will get the package for free until their next renewal. At that time, they will be forced to pay for TV even if they don’t use it.

According to the Spectrum letter: “You are not able to opt-out. However, if you feel this package doesn’t meet your needs you can purchase additional services and upgrades through Spectrum.”

This is a great deal for Spectrum because they get to claim every resident in the apartment complex as a Spectrum TV customer helping offset the number of cord cutters who have dropped Spectrum TV. A deal like this could bring Spectrum thousands of new TV customers because many apartment complexes are owned by large investors with multiple complexes in a single city. For the customer, this removes their control over what services they pay for.
