Spectrum, Altice, & Cable One Have an Internet Monopoly in Over Half of Their Markets

Over the last few years, we have seen a growing number of services try to launch high-speed Internet options to compete with traditional cable and DSL Internet. The hope has been to offer true competition for home Internet. Now according to a report from Grounded Reason, we get an idea of why more competition is so important.

According to the report from the Grounded Reason, Spectrum, Altice, and Cable One have a monopoly of Internet with 25 Mbps down or faster in over half of their markets (Comcast has a monopoly in 36.72% of its markets).

This lack of competition has helped to push up the high cost of cable Internet. But there is a growing movement to try and address this issue as companies like SpaceX and Amazon work on low Earth orbit Internet, and other options like 5G home Internet along with Fixed Wireless try to offer new options.

Amazon and SpaceX have both said they want to offer affordable high-speed Internet worldwide. SpaceX plans to start selling high-speed Internet in North America by the end of 2020. But for now, cord cutters will have to wait and hope these new Internet options reach them before we see a true price war start for home Internet.
