Spectrum Agrees to Pay $16.9 Million Over Internet Complaints

This week the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced a $16.9 million deal with Spectrum over Time Warner Cable’s internet service. The complaints come down to spectrum’s Time Warner Cable listing speeds but not offering them.

“This historic settlement serves as a warning to all companies in California that deceptive practices are bad for consumers and bad for business,” DA Jackie Lacey said in a statement. “We as prosecutors demand that all service providers – large and small – live up to their claims and fairly market their products. When they don’t, my office will take legal action to protect consumers.”

Spectrum has also agreed to give internet only customers a free month of Spectrum Choice TV. Cable TV customers who also have internet will get three free months of Showtime.

Some customers be eligible to receive a $90 one-time credit on their bill. Some customers who were issued outdated equipment can get a credit of up to $180. Spectrum will automatically issue the credits to all eligible customers within 60 days.

This all comes as recently local governments have been cracking down on internet companies advertising speeds but not delivering them. the District Attorney’s Office said Spectrum cooperated with the investigation but did not admit liability in the final deal.
