SpaceX has rolled out a more budget-friendly option for its Starlink satellite internet service, dubbed the “Residential Lite” plan, priced at $80 per month—a notable reduction from the standard $120 residential plan. The announcement, made earlier this week, targets smaller households with lighter data needs, aiming to broaden access to satellite internet in regions where traditional broadband remains elusive. However, the lower price comes with trade-offs, including slower speeds and deprioritized data, which may affect performance during peak usage times.
According to SpaceX, the Residential Lite plan offers download speeds of 50-100Mbps, a significant step down from the 150-250Mbps available with the standard residential plan. The company describes the new tier as “an affordable option for smaller households” that don’t require high data throughput. A support document on Starlink.com clarifies that the plan provides “unlimited deprioritized data,” meaning users will experience lower network priority compared to other Starlink fixed service plans. This could result in reduced speeds during high-traffic periods, a potential drawback for those expecting consistent performance.
The Residential Lite program, which first debuted in foreign markets last year, is now available in approximately 15 U.S. states, including Iowa, Maine, North Dakota, Minnesota, and New Mexico. SpaceX appears to have chosen these regions due to additional network capacity, as indicated on the coverage map displayed on Starlink.com’s order page. In contrast, other states face congestion charges and waitlists for the standard residential tier, reflecting SpaceX’s ongoing challenge to balance demand with network stability. The satellite internet service recently celebrated a milestone, reaching over 5 million users globally, underscoring its rapid growth since launching in 2019.
For eligible households in these 15 states, SpaceX sweetens the deal with a $200 “regional savings” discount on the standard Starlink dish, slashing the hardware cost from $349 to $149. This promotion, citing “abundant network availability,” is available until March 31, making it an attractive entry point for new users. The company also notes that Residential Lite subscribers can upgrade to the standard residential plan at any time, offering flexibility for those whose needs evolve. However, it remains unclear whether existing standard plan subscribers can downgrade to the Lite option, leaving some questions unanswered.
The introduction of Residential Lite reflects SpaceX’s broader strategy to cater to diverse user needs while expanding its footprint in the competitive internet service market.
