SpaceX Ramps Up Starlink Internet Speeds With Thousands of Space Lasers

Starlink is upgrading its satellite constellation to rev up its internet service. The company launched 8,000 upgraded space lasers capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 100 Gbps.

On September 26, Starlink posted a look at the improved V2 Mini satellites, which will enhance the constellation’s speed, reliability, and reach.

“Our next generation Starlink optical space lasers (pew pew!) were launched to orbit on Monday,” Starlink tweeted on X (formerly Twitter).

SpaceX launched 21 Starlink V2 Mini satellites into Low Earth Orbit on September 25. The space laser, dubbed Optical Intersatellite Links, helps satellites communicate in orbit with faster data transfers from one unit to another by passing the terrestrial Starlink Gateway ground station. The laser links will help satellites communicate faster, reducing latency and increasing internet speeds for its customers.

“With more than 8,000 space lasers across the constellation, Starlink satellites are able to connect thousands of kilometers apart, beyond the view of ground stations, and maintain pointing accuracy to enable transfer up to 100 Gbps on each link,” the company posted on X. “Starlink’s laser mesh network allows us to provide truly global coverage and serve those in the most remote locations on Earth, including maritime and aviation customers.”

Starlink has 4,827 satellites in its constellation, providing high-speed internet to 2 million users in 60 countries.

That number of satellites, which keeps growing, means Starlink has created the largest constellation to date, and it is visible from Earth without a telescope. Its network brings internet access to remote areas previously in a digital drought. SpaceX is adding new Starlink satellites almost weekly to expand its services around the globe. Starlink designed new satellites to be less reflective after astronomers voiced concerns over protecting the night sky.
