SpaceX Launches 11th Set of Starlink Satellites

Today, August 18, SpaceX launched 58 more Starlink satellites to build out its broadband constellation. With the 11th launch today, Starlink now has over 600 satellites in orbit.

The launch once again took place at SpaceX’s launch site in Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The launch used the first stage booster for today’s mission, marking the sixth launch for the booster and setting a record for SpaceX.

With private beta testing seemingly underway, SpaceX is moving toward its goal of reaching public beta testing this fall. Early speed test results have surfaced, showing solid performance though numbers are slightly below what SpaceX has promised for its Starlink internet service.

Beta users for Starlink satellite broadband service are reportedly seeing download speeds from 11Mbps to 60Mbps and upload speeds from 5Mbps to 18Mbps, with tests conducted with Ookla’s speedtest.net tool. Ping rates ranged from 31ms to 94ms, with later reports showing latency of 20ms and 21ms. The FCC requires latencies below 100ms, while Ookla recommends 59ms or lower for gaming.
