Starting September 1, you will need to pay your TV license fee to receive login access to the iPlayer. This applies for all platforms—from smart TVs to phones. Sorry British cord cutters, no more free ride.
So what is the license fee? The license fee is a tax collected by the BBC used primarily to fund the BBC radio and television services. This license fee is used to produce shows on both BBC TV and BBC Radio.
According to the BBC website the current fee for the PPB website is 145.50 pounds for color TV or 49 pounds for black-and-white TV. Currently you can pay yearly, quarterly, monthly, or weekly.
If you are already paying your TV license fee you will continue to get access to the BBC iPlayer. According to the BBC website, “You and anyone living at your address will already be covered to download or watch BBC programmes on demand on iPlayer. You are also already covered to watch or record live TV on any channel. You won’t need to buy a second licence for iPlayer or to pay anything extra.”
