Sony’s Head of PlayStation Vue Talks About the Future of the Service

Dwayne Benefield is a vice president at Sony and the head of PlayStation Vue. Recently he gave an interview at the NAB show and talked about the future of PlayStation Vue. This interview was from earlier this year, but it didn’t get a lot of coverage so we want to go over it and pull out some of the most interesting details.

4K Support

During the interview Benefield talked about the possibility of 4K coming to PlayStation Vue. He hinted that Sony would like to add 4K but that content providers needed more 4K content before they would add 4K support.

Currently, the only live TV streaming service that has even announced that 4K support is on the way is DIRECTV NOW, but it has not said when 4K support would be added.

Going Global

During the interview, one of the biggest bombshells was that PlayStation Vue was planning on going global. Benefield mentioned the possibility of launching in Europe. For now though he says Sony is just looking at its options and has not committed to any new markets yet.

More Local Stations

Now this one is likely no surprise but during the interview, Benefield said that Sony plans to add more locals. He did not say how many it would like to add but said it plans to add locals more quickly.

New Features

While not going into detail during the interview, Benefield did say that Sony plans to add more features such as multiview in the future. He did not go into what new features would be added but hinted that Sony wanted to keep pushing innovations.
