Hirai was the CEO of Sony at the time they created PlayStation Vue. It has been said that he was a huge supporter of PlayStation Vue as he focused on the PlayStation business as a big part of his efforts to make Sony profitable. Hirai was even the head of Sony’s gaming efforts.
In May of last year, some analysts started to predict that PlayStation Vue would be shut down. These predictions were once again heard in October 2018 as it was reported that at the time PlayStation Vue had only 500,000 subscribers compared to Sling TV’s 2.2 million.
Sony pushed back saying that there is “valuable consumer spending data” from PlayStation Vue. Since that announcement, Sony has doubled down on PlayStation Vue striking deals with Apple and Amazon to better integrate PlayStation Vue into the Apple TV and Fire TV. Sony has also struck new deals to bring Sinclair and Tribune locals back to its live TV streaming service.
Now with the Chairman of Sony leaving, it again raises questions about PlayStation Vue’s future. For now, Sony has been secretive about PlayStation Vue’s numbers. We do not know how many subscribers they have and if they numbers are going up or down.
Sony, in 2017, announced plans to add 4K support and international expansion. Sadly, that has not happened yet and it will be up to Sony’s new CEO and chairman to decide what future PlayStation Vue will have at Sony.
For now, Sony seems to be dedicated to the future of PlayStation Vue yet some are wondering what will be next.
Hopefully, Sony continues in their efforts to improve PlayStation Vue with new features and channels.
