Sony’s 2021 Bravia XR TV Line Will Feature Fancy ‘Cognitive’ Processing and Google TV

At an online event today, Sony announced a line of new LCD and OLED displays powered by Google TV, the Android TV variant we first saw in the Chromecast with Google TV. Sony’s touting its Bravia XR line as the world’s first “cognitive intelligence” TV, which it says is a step above the advanced AI (artificial intelligence) powering rival displays.

Terminology aside, the company says the Cognitive Processor XR built into these new sets divides the screen into zones and adjusts picture settings based on individual objects it recognizes on screen.

The Bravia XR line consists of five new models — three LCD-based TVs and two OLED displays. The LCD offerings include the top-of-the-line 8K Z9J (75″ and 85″), the 4K X95J (65″, 75″, and 85″), and the mid-tier 4K X90J (50″, 55″, 65″, and 75″). On the OLED side, there’s the high-end A90J (55″, 65″, and 83″) and A80J (55″, 65″, and 77″), both of which will be 4K sets.

The new sets also boast features sets including HDMI 2.1 and that fancy cognitive processing mentioned earlier. Pricing on specific models wasn’t released, but we’ll keep an eye out for further announcements.

Back when the Chromecast with Google TV was released, there were indications we’d see the customized version of Android TV elsewhere, and it looks like Sony’s Bravia XR will be among the first new devices to also offer the smart TV platform.

And with CES 2021 is set to officially kick off next week, we’ll have much more coverage throughout the week. Stay tuned for more news from the virtual show floor.
