Sony Says The Future of PlayStation Vue is “Uncertain”

This week, Sony held their Investor Relations and Corporate Strategy meetings in Tokyo, Japan. One of the more interesting notes from the event was Sony’s dedication to keep PlayStation Vue in the face of analyst calls to shut it down. Several analysts point to the fact that Sony has yet to hit one million subscribers after three years.

So why is Sony keeping PlayStation Vue? Sony seems to see PlayStation Vue as a way to not only sell TV services but also as a way to push back against Google, Amazon, and Facebook. During the meeting, Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said, “The data mega players (such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook) are so powerful they are capable of doing all kinds of things.” He went on to say Sony’s survival lies in the “extent to which we can take control of data and AI.”

With PlayStation Vue, Sony gets an in-depth look at what people are watching. This data can easily be used to help Sony Pictures produce movies and TV shows or Sony’s games department develop more games people want to play.

While PlayStation Vue may not be as big or as profitable as analysts want, Sony seems to have other goals. If Sony can continue to find value in the data PlayStation Vue offers, they will continue to offer PlayStation Vue even if the service is not performing as well as analysts want.

Though Sony did clearly say in their presentation that the “market and future business model (for PlayStation Vue) remains uncertain.”
